It's interesting to me that Richard Hendrickson, after studying MANY prototype photos though not having Rule 66 info, concluded that the interval must be around a year or so,
Tony ThompsonTony Thompsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11593061828601275378noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3218524178230712938.post-12075969461305227742014-12-02T07:26:55.507-08:002014-12-02T07:26:55.507-08:00I should also clarify, plain bearings were PKD (wh...I should also clarify, plain bearings were PKD (when new) or RPKD (repacked), and roller bearings were LUB. If you have information on roller bearing servicing requirements (i.e. Rule 66-A), I'd appreciate it.Arvedhttp://www.arvedgrass.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3218524178230712938.post-19820232813844767942014-12-02T07:23:06.278-08:002014-12-02T07:23:06.278-08:00Repack was covered by Interchange Rule 66:
Before...Repack was covered by Interchange Rule 66:

Before 1929 Rule 66 stated that journals should be repacked as necessary.

On March 1, 1929 The ARA's Arbitration Committee revised Rule 66 and required cars in interchange be repacked every twelve months.

In 1933 the interval was increased to fifteen months. (I haven't found a reference to the specific date)

On January 1, 1949, The Interchange Rules were modified to include Rule 66-A which added the roller bearing lubrication instructions.

Effective August 1, 1954 the interval was increased to eighteen months.

Beginning in 1958 if cars were equipped with specified journal lubricating devices the interval was twenty-four months, otherwise eighteen months through 1960.

Plain bearings (Timken coined the term "Friction Bearing" to describe these bearings in its marketing material) were allowed in interchange until 1995, but I can't locate the interchange rules of later dates to confirm the repack interval in the post-steam era.Arvedhttp://www.arvedgrass.comnoreply@blogger.com
