I understood they were cigarette fibers, among other things.

That plant produced a very distinctive smell. I'll always remember that smell, for sure, but more than that I can remember the house shaking whenever Norfolk Southern's finest diesels pulled a long train of their chief commodity down the NW side. All the mt's went back up the old VGN side across the river.

I model the late 1920s, but still hang on to a collection of N&W and SOU rolling stock from the 80's. Perhaps one day I'll upgrade my Celanese tank cars for a train appropriate to that era.

Thanks again for an enjoyable blog.

Galen Gallimorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10272822237546731134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3218524178230712938.post-37945468403493550712013-01-01T19:58:54.223-08:002013-01-01T19:58:54.223-08:00You're welcome, Galen. Unfortunately she didn't know much about the railroad aspects of the plant except that it was serviced by the VGN (until '59) and the N&W after that. But I have many fond memories of her house right above the N&W main line and across the New River Valley from the VGN line. I have a few Celanese tank cars and I suspect they're pretty inaccurate but that doesn't matter...for now.Galen Gallimorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10272822237546731134noreply@blogger.com
